Everyone at the Shewsy would like to say a big Thank You to our funders who have helped us provide vital services over the last year and into 2022:
October 2021
Kenny O’Connell applied for a grant from The Rushworths Trust for equipment for the Joseph Lappin Music Suite. He was successful in obtaining a grant of £600 towards new equipment for the recording studio and repairs to existing instruments. The new recording studio is looking good and Kenny is currently working on a Shewsy Christmas song to be released soon.
Shrewsbury House is delivering an Out of School Holiday programme this sOctober half term. Grant funding from OPAL (October Play and Activity Liverpool) via MPAC will contribute towards daily hot meals to replace those missed free school dinners, staffing costs and play/arts equipment. The clubs will also deliver activities over Mischief night, Halloween and Bonfire Night.
September 2021
Shrewsbury House has been successful in obtaining grant funding from P H Holt Foundation. The grant of £11,000 from the ‘P H Holt Resilience Fund’ will contribute towards the staff wages budget for 2021-22. This grant will make a significant difference to the number of children we can work with in afterschool club, senior club and during the out of school holiday schemes.
June 2021
The Julia and Hans Rausing Trust provided Shrewsbury House with a grant for core operational costs from their ‘Youth Centre Recovery Fund’. The grant was equivalent to six months overhead costs to help The Shewsy to get back on its feet post covid 19.
February 2021
Sport England ‘Return to Play’ gave Shrewsbury House a grant of £2,800 to start a Bicycle Recycle Project. Halfords, along with local families, donated bikes which were restored and put back into the community. Young people were given the skills to maintain their bikes and repair punctures. During the 2021 lockdown and post lockdown in the summer months staff members have taken groups on cycle days out along the Liverpool loop line and the promenade. A designated space is being converted into a workshop to continue this important activity when bikes are handed in to Shrewsbury House.
December 2020
The Garfield Weston Foundation awarded Shrewsbury House a grant of £60,000 spread over two years for salary costs post covid 19 to enable the centre to remain operational and to provide us with more time to recover from the lack of opportunities to self-generate income for the centre’s future sustainability. This generous grant from Garfield Weston came just at the right time to help us get back on our feet.

We are delighted to announce that we have been granted funding from the @JHRTrust via their “Youth Centre Recovery Fund”.
After a tough year, the club is back up and running to full capacity again and we are close to full. This funding will allow us to continue to offer support to hundreds of young people from our local community and surrounding areas, and now more than ever that support is greatly needed.
We are proud to be working with a funder like Julia and Hans Rausing who understand the need for centres like ours, as they have said recently:
“The last year has been incredibly difficult for young people, whose education and social lives have been severely interrupted by the pandemic. Youth centres play a vital role in providing young people with educational, leisure and Social opportunities”.
We are delighted to be back doing what we love to do for the benefit of the children and young people.
The 2020 Big Give Christmas Challenge ended on Tuesday 8th December and we have raised an amazing £44,015 from our online campaign in just one week! This total includes the match funding from our Shrewsbury House Pledgers and the Four Acre Trust, along with any gift aid that can be claimed from HMRC on your donations.
Thank you to all who contributed. This means so much to us as we can get on with Refreshing Shrewsbury House, continuing tomake it a useable space during the current coronavirus pandemic and ensuring it is futureproofed for the generations of new users to come.
Your generosity is overwhelming. THANK YOU everyone for continuing to support our work at The Shewsy.
We are busy stacking up this year’s effort in the Big Give, which every year engages charitable giving trusts and foundations who will MATCH pledged funds before the individual charity seeks donations in a single week in December each year.
Our campaign is entitled Refreshing Shrewsbury House.
“Shrewsbury House is undergoing a much needed refurbishment but beyond basic replacement and maintenance, we need to respond to the needs of our children partially highlighted by the Covid pandemic. There are over 50 children per after school club session where we provide a warm and welcoming environment, but this is not enough. We need to provide sensory space, a computer room and disabled access with specialist staff to deliver life coping skills for all our children and teenagers.”
The Big Give – So Far So Good – Now we need ALL of you
Thanks to our wonderful team of Pledgers we have secured our initial target of £10,000. At that point it became a question of would a charitable trust match it….. and the marvellous Four Acre trust have done just that. They too will give the club £10,000, with one proviso…. We must now MATCH the promised funds by raising our own £20,000 in just ONE week. That’s the deal. That week starts at midday on Monday 1st December and lasts until 12.00 noon on 8th December. Please press the Donate button and help now.
We need a huge number of us to show our support, give what we can and also spread the word and ask others to do the same. We have already made great progress in refurbishing our beloved building and it’s in great shape, but we do need to do more to equip us for the coming decades. In addition to that, your generosity will keep our superb part time staff team going.
Thank you. Thank you for your past support. Thank you again for supporting us now.

We’re pleased to report that we are open again and are delighted members and staff are back in enjoying the Shewsy. We have good safety measures in place and are running a limited number of places in bubbles that need to be booked in advance. You can read a fuller report from John Dumbell here. We are very pleased that we have been able to furlough most of our staff and no – one has lost their job due to the pandemic. Thank you for your support and encouragement in this most difficult period.
Our e mail system and website page has been secured and we would be grateful if you could revert to contacting Team Leader, John Dumbell and Administrator, Carol Bennett on their original e mail addresses
Lockdown has at least enabled us to crack on with the refurbishment of the building. We will shortly provide a full report of what we have achieved to date and what is still left to do. We will need to raise more funds to enable further progress, but we are hopeful we may manage that. Some of you have been instrumental in providing the funds to help us do what we have, so thank you very much indeed.
